Safety Requirements Specification

The safety requirement specification (SRS) is a documentation requirement of the IEC61508 & IEC61511.  The SRS is a summary of some key decisions that must be made prior to the detail design.  The purpose of the SRS is to define the envelope of Safety Instrumented System (SIS) design.  The SRS consists of both the safety functional requirements and safety integrity requirements. The contents of the SRS consist of information supplied by CLIENT at the initiation of the project and information gathered during execution of the project.

At a minimum, a preliminary process hazards analysis should be completed prior to initiation of the safety requirement specification.  The results of the process hazards analysis should be used to determine the specific safety integrity level (SIL) required for risk reduction.
