CHAZOP – Control HAZOP

CHAZOP provides a structured and systematic framework and approach to review the controllability, safety and operability issues surrounding the implementation of advanced control applications (usually DCS, PLC – computer based).

The objective of the CHAZOP is to examine the detailed design to identify any hazards that could result in injury to persons, environmental pollution, damage to equipment or structures, or have a serious impact on operations from a control, instrumentation and electrical point of view. These potential hazards and risk should be controlled and minimized by applying suitable safety in design and physical or operational safeguards.

CHAZOP Chairman with the CHAZOP team will review the Control philosophy, PLC schematic diagram and the Nodes to be studied. For each unit studied, the Process Engineer will explain the engineering drawings and described the process during the session. The Instrumentation Engineer then will give an overview for the control philosophy for each node.

The purpose of the CHAZOP is to examine how the PLC-controlled elements of the control systems may deviate from their designed function and what (if any) effect that would have on the process. The existing design and it’s inherent safeguards will be reviewed to assess their adequacy.

Where necessary, actions will be raised to cover agreed modifications to design or operations, procedural changes or clarifications, such that the risks are minimised as far as reasonably practicable. Ad-hoc notes will be taken as needed to record discussions.
