TARGET AUDIENCE:

The course is suitable for engineers at middle management with 5-10 years of plant experience. It provides an insight for the study on identification and minimization/elimination of hazards at the work place.

COURSE DESIGN:

The course covers all six stages of the ICI hazard study process – of which HAZOP is stage No.3. This is a particularly comprehensive training course as it covers the preliminary hazard studies, which can be carried out when the project is still at the conceptual stage, and also hazard studies of existing operating plant. This is often useful to managers of existing older plants who are seeking assurance that safety risks have been identified and assessed and that the risks are being suitably managed.

The course covers three aspects of leading Hazard Studies:

  1. Knowledge of the techniques of the Hazard Study process so the leader can lead the project team through the various studies.
  2. Skills in the running of Hazard Studies – this picks up the behavioural / group dynamics part of the study leading role in getting the best out of the Hazard Study team. Also, skills on how to avoid pitfalls, and to drive full benefit out of the exercise.
  3. Some technical expertise in risk management / loss prevention. This covers such topics as fire and toxic hazards, tolerability of risk, inherent safety, reliability of instrumented protective systems, hazard analysis, human error, etc. This helps the team leader also to be a more effective loss prevention advisor to the Hazard Study team as it makes decisions through the course of the study.

The course is a combination of presentations, videos, case studies, and syndicate exercises.

The course outline is as follows:

  1. Attendee Introductions & Individual Objectives
